While I have many fond memories of Aunt Madge from family summer visits to Beattyville when I was a child, my most compelling memories of her are from the recent past. Madge endured the pain and debilitation of Parkinson's Disease with fierce determination and grace. She lived her life with a deep sense of joy(it was amazing how many things were "so much fun" to her) and she took deep pleasure in her wonderful family and her many friendships. She was an educator to the end of her life, and relentlessly advocated for a new public library building for the people of Beattyville until, against all odds, that building became a reality. Like her sister Gladys (who turns 100 in a few weeks), Madge bled Kentucky Wildcat Blue and was a big basketball fan. In my last visit with her, Madge, Gladys, my wife Sharon and I watched the 2019 NCAA basketball semi-final game (UVA vs. Auburn) on the television in Madge's nursing home room. What great fun that was. What a great person she was. What a great spirit she remains.
